Flood Preparedness: First steps
Fooding is an ongoing concern in our community and for many others across North America. We love our home on the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Adventure Marine has been based here since 1974. However, floods have had dramatic consequences in the area. Many still remember June 10, 1948 when the Fraser River spilled its shores severing two transcontinental rail lines. It also flooded many urban areas, and left a major path of destruction in its wake.
The historical Fraser River flood was due to a combination of environmental factors including rising sea levels from climate change, increased snowfall, and a rapid thaw cycle. Seasonally, these issues create ongoing potential for major floods in the coming years. In fact, the potential for flooding is looking questionable right now in BC. If you live in an at-risk area, are you prepared? Always have a plan, and just in case, prepare for the aftermath by purchasing the right boat.
Create A Plan
The best defense against natural disaster is to have a detailed plan in place well in advance. Everyone’s plan will be different depending on location and the people involved. Be sure to look up your local emergency centres and stay connected to weather alerts. Always ensure you’re working with the most accurate and up-to-date information. Here are some resources to help you put together the best strategy for you.
Once your plan is in place, its time to start thinking of what happens when a flood is underway. It may come fast, or there may be unforeseen circumstances preventing your departure. So what happens next? If you planned ahead, you’d have the right boat.
Buy the Right Boat
Will you be able to help your neighbours (or flee if necessary)? Make sure you buy the right boat so you have the option. Some boats are better suited to handle flood conditions than others. For example, if you live in a flood-prone area, you may want to consider an aluminum hull. Aluminum is lightweight and very durable making it a great ally in emergency situations.
You can also further minimize your risk with making the best choice on an engine. Choosing an outboard motor has certain advantages in an emergency situation. It has a shallower draft and more maneuverability to avoid debris and submerged threats. It is also easier to perform maintenance in a pinch.
Thinking one step even further, let’s consider in-water debris. Debris and unseen objects are inevitable in all flood conditions. The best way to protect your chosen motor from damage, and you from risky situations, is a durable propellor line guard. A prop guard protects against fishing lines and downrigger wires, as well as submerged fences and other damaging waste.
In conclusion: First and foremost be ready with a plan. Combine that plan with the right boat, and you will be ready for any possible life and death flooding situation.
